Why do we need to define objectives properly?

Wanting to achieve something without setting objectives is a bit like sailing without a course – in the end you get lost along the way. Setting Objectives means giving yourself a clear direction for achieving them, so that you can measure your progress.

The objectives represent our commitment, mobilizing energy and resources towards the desired results.

Nevertheless they still need to be well defined.

To define objectives properly, it is important to write them down simply and precisely, in a common language that everyone can understand, in order to facilitate mobilization and commitment to their success.

There are several approaches to write effective objectives, and here we are going to look at the SMART method.

This is an acronym where each letter is a guide to defining relevant, concrete and achievable objectives:

  • 🎯 Specific : the objective is simple and precise

The objective is written simply and precisely, detailing the expected result

  • 📏 Mesurable : the objective can be measured to track progress and success

The objective has indicators to monitor its progress and allow it to be considered achieved.

  • ⛰️ Achievable : the objective is within the scope of the person achieving it

The objective is within the means available to achieve it

  • 📈 Realistic: the objective takes account of environmental and resource constraints

The objective takes account of the environment and the resources needed to achieve it

  • ⌛ Time-bound: the objective is limited in time

The objective is set in time, with deadlines. This provides a time horizon for achieving the objective and motivates you to act quickly and effectively.

By using the SMART method to write your objectives, you create the opportunity to clearly align expectations and the steps to achieve them. And in doing so, you ensure a way to stay focused, organized and motivated, with the objective always in sight!
